Attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro
On June 29, Russia launched strikes on the cities of Zaporizhzhia and Dnipro, specifically hitting civilian transport and an industrial facility. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attacks. In Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces deployed FPV drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles to target non-military sites.
One strike destroyed a minibus, while another explosion occurred near a city bus. In Dnipro, a civilian production plant was hit, resulting in fatalities and more than twenty injuries. Additional shelling was reported in Kherson, Kharkiv, Donetsk region, and Sumy region, underscoring the ongoing Russian aggression.
Presidential Statement and Regional Outlook
Zelenskyy stated that 'effectively, there is a hunt for civilian objects and ordinary transport.'
He further noted that despite Russia's status as an 'oil state,' it is now facing a gasoline shortage—a direct consequence of the war. The president added that 'Russia's political leadership is constantly obsessed with Donbas,' highlighting their territorial ambitions in the region.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Russian military has set 15 different deadlines for capturing Donetsk Oblast. In 2022 alone, five such dates were announced, ranging from March 31 to December 31. The current target for taking Donetsk Oblast is December 31, 2026. These timelines illustrate the aggressor's persistent intentions on Ukrainian soil.
These events underscore the escalation of the conflict and the growing threat to Ukrainian civilians. The continued shelling of non-military targets demonstrates the aggressor's disregard for humanitarian norms, endangering the lives of ordinary people. At the same time, Zelenskyy's remarks about Russia's fuel shortage may point to economic strains from sanctions and war, potentially affecting Moscow's future military capabilities.
The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, with Ukraine also taking significant actions against Russian targets. Recently, Ukrainian forces struck three locations nearly 1,500 kilometers away from the front lines, showcasing their capability to reach deep into enemy territory. This strategic move highlights the broader implications of the war and the shifting dynamics on the battlefield.
