International Women's Day: Its History and Modern Significance

Father Yulian Tymchuk has commented on the observance of March 8th, highlighting its historical role in defending rights and noting the absence of any formal church prohibition against celebrating it. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed Ukrainian women on the occasion, underscoring the day's importance. March 8th is recognized globally as International Women's Day, a day dedicated to women's rights and international peace, which the United Nations officially adopted in 1977.

The Origins of the Day

The day's history traces back to March 8, 1857, when textile workers in New York City went on strike. Their demands included:

  • equal pay,
  • improved working conditions,
  • a ten-hour workday.

Subsequently, on March 8, 1908, thousands of women again marched through New York's streets, demanding voting rights and protesting harsh labor conditions and child exploitation.

'Many people ask me if it's appropriate to celebrate March 8th. My response is this: When you look at this day through a historical lens, you see women defending their rights, which were not always equal to those of men.' Father Yulian Tymchuk

Father Yulian Tymchuk remarks on the day's significance, clarifying that while it is not a church feast from a liturgical standpoint, 'there is no ban on celebrating this day.' According to him, 'If we look at what the Lord tells us through Scripture, we see that God has always honored women. It is not good for man to be alone. And it is similarly said: husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church.'

It is worth noting that International Women's Day is not included in the religious calendar, which further emphasizes its secular nature and its importance in the context of the struggle for women's rights. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing global pursuit of gender equality.

Thus, March 8th remains a significant observance that recalls the importance of women's rights and their contributions to society. The commemoration has deep historical roots connected to women's fight for their rights. The day's importance is highlighted not only by historical events but also by contemporary addresses from leaders, including Ukrainian officials. It serves as a reminder of the progress achieved in women's rights and the continued need to strive for equality and justice in society.
