Anna Muzychuk to Compete in the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament

According to Главком: Ukrainian chess grandmaster Anna Muzychuk has been added to the roster for the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament, replacing India's Humpy Koneru, who withdrew from the competition. The tournament will be held in Cyprus from March 28 to April 16, 2026. The winner will earn the right to challenge the reigning world champion, Ju Wenjun, for the world title.

Changes to the Participant List

On March 22, 2026, the International Chess Federation (FIDE) announced changes to the lineup for the Women's Candidates Tournament. Humpy Koneru withdrew due to safety concerns related to a conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran. The vacant spot was offered to the highest-rated player from the 2024-2025 Women's Grand Prix series who had not already qualified. Anna Muzychuk, who was ranked ninth, accepted the invitation, marking her fourth appearance in the Candidates Tournament.

In the previous 2024 Candidates Tournament, Anna Muzychuk finished in last place. However, she has also achieved significant successes, including winning a Grand Prix stage in Austria and securing a silver medal at the World Blitz Championship, where she was defeated in the final by Kazakhstan's Bibisara Assaubayeva.

The 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament will run concurrently with the men's event. FIDE's Executive Director, Emil Sutovsky, confirmed that the competition schedule remains unchanged. German businessman Vadim Rosenstein had offered to relocate the tournament to Germany and cover all expenses, but FIDE rejected this proposal, insisting the event be held in Peya, near Paphos, Cyprus.

Other participants in the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament will include:

  • Tan Zhongyi
  • Zhu Jiner
  • Divya Deshmukh
  • Aleksandra Goryachkina
  • Kateryna Lagno
  • Vaishali Rameshbabu
  • Bibisara Assaubayeva
Humpy Koneru stated: 'No event, however important, can be above personal safety.'

Muzychuk's inclusion underscores the heightened focus on player safety in elite chess amid global tensions. The Candidates Tournament is a grueling, round-robin event that determines the challenger for the most prestigious title in women's chess. Despite her past struggles in this specific format, her vast experience and recent strong results could prove crucial in the high-stakes battle in Cyprus, where the competition promises to be intense.
