Japan Ends Ban on Lethal Weapons Exports

According to Главком: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has formally ended Japan's long-standing restrictions on exporting lethal weaponry to other nations. Japanese companies are now authorized to sell lethal arms directly to 17 approved countries. This marks a significant shift from Japan's post-war pacifist stance, though a core prohibition remains: weapons cannot be sent to nations engaged in active conflict, barring exceptional cases where Japan's own national security is directly threatened.

The ruling party in Japan has backed this move, signaling the nation's growing willingness to take a more active role in global defense matters. In a related development, Japan's Ministry of Defense has already begun deploying upgraded Type-12 surface-to-ship missile units, whose operational range has been extended from 200 km to over 1,000 km.

Simultaneously, she stressed that 'there is absolutely no change in our commitment to the path and fundamental principles we have upheld as a peaceful nation for over 80 years since the war.'

Japan's Defense Industry Plans

Japan intends to supply modern frigates to the Philippines, submarines to Indonesia, along with air defense systems and other advanced military equipment. The policy shift is framed within a regional security context where Japan identifies several nations as primary security concerns:

  • China
  • Russia
  • North Korea

These revisions to Japan's arms export policy demonstrate the country's adaptation to new security challenges on the international stage. This strategic pivot allows Japan to strengthen military partnerships with key regional allies, directly responding to an increasingly tense security environment in East Asia. The decision could reshape defense dynamics across the Indo-Pacific, as Japan assumes a more prominent role in regional security frameworks.

As Japan redefines its arms export policy, the regional dynamics are shifting, prompting reactions from neighboring countries. Recently, Russia has expressed concerns regarding Japan's military engagements, particularly in relation to its dealings with Ukraine. This development highlights the broader implications of Japan's new defense strategy and its potential impact on international relations.
