Russian Frigate Admiral Essen Stripped of Missile Capabilities in Novorossiysk Port Attack
Nighttime Strike Targets Novorossiysk Port
According to ХВИЛЯ: A major nighttime assault on the port of Novorossiysk on March 2nd damaged multiple vessels of Russia's Black Sea Fleet and infrastructure at an oil terminal. Reports indicate up to 200 drones were involved in the operation, highlighting its significant scale and coordination.
Damaged Vessels and Widespread Consequences
The frigate Admiral Essen was among the most severely damaged ships, suffering a hit to its superstructure. A fire on its deck burned for roughly 18 hours, pointing to serious internal damage and hampered firefighting efforts. Commissioned into Russia's Black Sea Fleet in 2014, the Admiral Essen saw action in Syria in 2017 and has been used to launch missile strikes against Ukraine since 2022.
Other naval assets were also damaged in the attack:
- The sea minesweeper Valentin Pikul
- The anti-submarine corvettes Yeysk and Kasimov
- A Project 1241 Molniya-class missile boat
Furthermore, the strike disabled a 30N6E2 radar for an S-300PMU-2 Favorit air defense system and damaged a Pantsir-S2 anti-aircraft system. Official Russian sources reported three sailors killed and 14 wounded during the response to the attack.
The attack also inflicted heavy losses on infrastructure at the Sheskharis oil terminal, where six out of seven oil-loading gantries were put out of action. A TK-25 electronic warfare complex was destroyed, and guidance radars for the ZR-90 Orekh system were seriously damaged. As a result, the frigate Admiral Essen has been temporarily deprived of its ability to launch missile strikes against Ukraine.
"During the operation, the Security Service of Ukraine penetrated the dense, multi-layered enemy air defense system around Novorossiysk Bay and the port. The fire on the deck lasted about 18 hours-this indicates serious internal destruction and complicated work for the emergency teams." - SBU Representative
This attack marks a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, particularly within the context of Black Sea operations. The strike underscores the growing prominence of drone warfare in modern conflicts and signals a potential shift in the balance of power in the region. The damage to the Admiral Essen and other vessels could significantly impair the operational capabilities of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, presenting new tactical challenges. Developments in the Black Sea theater will continue to be closely monitored as both sides adapt their strategies in response to each other's actions.
