Fatal Helicopter Collision Near Everest Base Camp Claims Indian Tourist’s Life, Several Injured
Helicopter Crash at Everest Base Camp
According to УНІАН — Туризм: On November 3, 2026, two helicopters collided near the Everest base camp in Nepal, resulting in the death of an Indian tourist and injuries to two others. The accident occurred during the landing approach close to the base camp, situated in the village of Phortse at an altitude of 4,200 meters. The aircraft involved belonged to private operators Fishtail Air and Dynasty Air.
Fishtail Air’s helicopter was transporting passengers evacuated from the Everest region, while the Dynasty Air helicopter was carrying cargo. Footage of the crash shows one helicopter clipping the other as they approached the landing zone. Aviation specialists suggest the collision may have been caused by miscommunication between the pilots, since the area lies outside the coverage of Lukla airport's control tower. Pilots are required to coordinate directly with each other in such conditions, but evidently, this protocol was not followed.
Aftermath and Safety Concerns
The crash claimed the life of an Indian tourist, with a New Zealand passenger and a Nepali pilot sustaining injuries. This incident occurred during one of Nepal’s peak tourist seasons, raising serious questions about the safety of air travel in this mountainous region. In response, Nepalese authorities are planning to tighten regulations for climbers attempting Everest, especially given prior warnings from scientists about risks linked to a massive glacier in the area.
This tragedy highlights the critical need for strict safety measures in mountain aviation and underscores the importance of clear pilot communication when air traffic control is unavailable.
While Nepal continues to attract adventure seekers worldwide, such events may impact tourist confidence and demand stronger oversight of local aviation operators to prevent future disasters.
