Belgium to Deliver Seven F-16s to Ukraine by Late 2026
F-16 Fighter Jet Transfer to Ukraine
According to Главком: Belgium plans to hand over seven F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by the end of 2026. Of these, four will serve as spare parts donors, while three will join Ukraine's fleet to defend against Russian attacks. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced this ahead of a NATO defense ministers' meeting in Brussels. This commitment is part of a broader Western effort to bolster Ukraine's air capabilities amid ongoing hostilities.
Theo Francken stated: 'This year, we will help by transferring seven F-16s. Four for spare parts, three to operate in Ukraine's skies to protect Ukraine from Russian aggression and Shahed drones.'
The minister also emphasized his intention to propose that the government transfer all of Belgium's F-16s to Ukraine in the coming years. However, the transfer of aircraft can only proceed after Belgium receives its F-35s, which are necessary to maintain its own air defense and fulfill its role in NATO's nuclear doctrine.
Support for Ukraine Amid Threats
Belgium had previously indicated its plan to gradually transfer its entire F-16 fleet to Ukraine after transitioning to the F-35. A key factor in this process is the delay in aircraft delivery, caused by issues with F-35 shipments from the United States. Meanwhile, Ukrainian pilots are actively mastering navigation skills without a stable GPS signal due to the threat of Russian electronic warfare.
The transfer of F-16 fighter jets from Belgium marks a significant step in strengthening the Ukrainian Air Force, enabling the country to better counter Russian attacks. NATO's support, particularly through modern aircraft, underscores the allies' commitment to ensuring Ukraine's security in the face of growing threats.
Belgium is expected to continue supporting Ukraine by transferring additional aircraft in the future, depending on the country's progress in meeting its own rearmament obligations.
As Belgium prepares to enhance Ukraine's aerial defense with the transfer of F-16s, it's essential to note that Ukrainian pilots are already advancing their skills on different aircraft. Specifically, they have commenced training on Swedish Gripen jets, which could further diversify their operational capabilities. This development highlights the ongoing commitment of Western allies to bolster Ukraine's military readiness amidst escalating threats.
