Belgium and Spain Pledge €1 Billion Each for Ukraine's Military Needs
Defense Ministers of Ukraine, Belgium, and Spain Hold Talks
According to Главком: Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov met with his Belgian counterpart, Theo Francken, and Spain's Margarita Robles to discuss cooperation in air defense, drones, artillery, and the defense industry. During these talks, both Belgium and Spain reaffirmed their commitment to provide Ukraine with €1 billion in aid for 2024. Belgium also confirmed its intention to deliver additional F-16 fighter jets and spare parts for Ukraine's existing aircraft. This substantial financial and military support comes as Ukraine continues to defend its territory against a larger invading force.
Key Areas of Cooperation
The meeting focused on key collaborative efforts, including the development of defense industries under the European SAFE mechanism. Mykhailo Fedorov stated:
“During the meeting, we focused on developing cooperation between our defense industries, particularly within the European SAFE mechanism. We are ready to provide a list of manufacturers who can establish cooperation with Spanish companies. For its part, Ukraine has also offered the possibility of testing Spanish drones in combat conditions.” - Mykhailo Fedorov
The Ukrainian Defense Minister also thanked Belgium and Spain for their consistent support, emphasizing that “thanks to win-win cooperation with partners, Ukraine continues to restrain the enemy's advance on the ground and de-occupy territories, protect the sky and improve the effectiveness of intercepting missiles and drones, as well as intensify strikes on Russia's economy.”
Furthermore, Fedorov discussed preparations for the upcoming Ramstein Contact Group meeting scheduled for April 15. This meeting aims to strengthen international defense support for Ukraine. The Ramstein format has been a critical platform for coordinating military aid to Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began.
This meeting reflects Ukraine's strategic course of deepening defense cooperation with European nations, a crucial element in the context of the ongoing conflict with Russia. Support from Belgium and Spain, along with opportunities to test new technologies in combat conditions, could significantly enhance Ukraine's defensive capabilities. The importance of international support under conditions of aggression is underscored by the planned Ramstein Contact Group meeting, indicating a continued effort to bolster Ukraine's defensive position on the international stage.
As the situation evolves, strengthening air defenses remains a top priority for Ukraine. In a related context, President Zelenskyy recently led a command meeting focused on enhancing Ukraine's air defense capabilities and boosting domestic production. This initiative aligns with ongoing discussions about international military support, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in securing Ukraine's sovereignty.
