Suspect Named 'Talib' Charged with Torturing Civilians in Berdyansk Region
Charges Filed Against 'Talib'
According to Главком: A fighter from a Chechen unit of the Russian military, known by the alias 'Talib', has been formally accused of brutalizing civilians in the Berdyansk district. This information comes from the Berdyansk district police department and Ukraine's National Police. Talib, acting as a representative of Russian forces, is suspected of committing serious crimes against non-combatants during the occupation of part of the Zaporizhzhia region.
Crimes and Their Aftermath
In the spring of 2022, Talib and other Russian servicemen set up a base at a stadium in the village of Osypenko, Berdyansk district, which they turned into an illegal detention center for holding and torturing pro-Ukrainian civilians. That April, Talib and his associates raided the private home of a local family, demanding weapons and threatening to shoot them. The homeowner was abducted, bound, and taken to the torture site, where he was repeatedly and severely beaten with a hammer on the head and back.
During his captivity, the terrorists employed brutal interrogation methods. The victim was chained to a hot metal pipe and threatened with a painful death. He also endured psychological abuse, including mock executions where assailants fired assault rifles close to his head. Conditions were dire: the prisoner was held without adequate food, drinking water, medical care, or sanitation for 43 days.
It is important to note that as a result of these actions, two minor sons were left without parental care, living under the control of occupation forces. The National Police noted that 'the children were also threatened with weapons and execution, causing them severe psychological suffering.'
Talib has now been notified of suspicion under charges of cruel treatment of civilians. Separately, Ukraine's Main Intelligence Directorate, National Police, and the Prosecutor General's Office have identified four war criminals who committed atrocities in Antratsyt in 2014. Against this backdrop, two Russian Interior Ministry employees involved in torturing Ukrainian prisoners of war were eliminated in Moscow on Yeletskaya Street.
This news underscores the gravity of allegations against Russian forces and their accomplices, who, according to Ukrainian law enforcement, systematically commit crimes against civilians. Investigating such cases is crucial not only for holding perpetrators accountable but also for protecting the rights of civilians suffering from violence and terror during the conflict. Identifying Talib and other war criminals may be a significant step toward achieving justice for the victims of the war in Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine continues to reveal harrowing accounts of violence and abuse against civilians. In a related case, two Russian soldiers have been implicated in the torture and murder of a Ukrainian policeman in the Kyiv region. These incidents underline a disturbing pattern of brutality faced by those opposing the occupation forces.
