Czech Republic stops funding Ukraine: Babiš announces a change of course
Change of Foreign Policy Course of the Czech Republic
According to Главком: The Czech Republic has announced a shift in its foreign policy course, abandoning funding for Ukraine due to budget deficits. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš confirmed that the new government will focus on internal issues, providing humanitarian aid to Ukraine but without direct financial expenditures on armaments.
Andrej Babiš returned to power after the victory of the ANO party in the October 2025 elections. According to his words, the Czech Republic will no longer be a financial guarantor for loans to Ukraine. Babiš noted:
“The state treasury is empty, and the country has no intention of acting as a guarantor or providing funds to other states.” - Andrej Babiš
The new Czech government, which in December 2025 includes representatives of the SPD party and 'Motorists for Themselves', emphasizes ensuring the welfare of its own citizens.
The opposition noted that during the Fiala government, the Czech Republic provided Ukraine with nearly 2 million ammunition, highlighting the changes in the new administration's policy. It is also worth noting that the head of the SPD party, Tomio Okamura, emphasized:
“Prague should not supply weapons to Kyiv; funds are better directed to our own citizens.” - Tomio Okamura
Impact on Ukrainian-Czech Relations
Thus, the Czech Republic is changing its approach to funding Ukraine, focusing efforts on internal issues and humanitarian aid instead of direct financial expenditures on armaments.
This shift in the Czech Republic's foreign policy could significantly affect Ukrainian-Czech relations and overall support for Ukraine in the region. Amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the refusal of military assistance may impact Ukraine's ability to receive necessary support from its partners. The new Czech government seems to prioritize internal issues, which may indicate changes in sentiments in Europe regarding military assistance to Ukraine.
