European Athletics Championships 2028 Set for Poland

According to Главком: At a meeting in Birmingham, the European Athletics Council confirmed that Poland will host the 2028 European Athletics Championships. The competition is scheduled for June 3–8, 2028, with Silesia chosen as the host region and the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów serving as the main venue. This marks the fourth time in history that the European Championships will take place in the same year as the Olympic Games, which begin in Los Angeles one month after the European event.

Sebastian Chmara described Poland’s selection as a historic milestone. The country has prior experience organizing international athletics events, including:

  • the European Team Championships,
  • the World Athletics Relays,
  • the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial.

Poland ranks sixth in the all-time European Championships medal table, with a total of 185 medals, 59 of which are gold.

Future Prospects for Athletics in Poland

Dobromir Karamarinov noted that Silesia 2028 offers a glimpse into the future of the sport. The next European Athletics Championships in 2026 will be hosted by Birmingham in August. As part of preparations for the European event, World Athletics plans to introduce a separate competition for the legendary distance starting in 2030. These developments underscore Poland’s growing prominence on the international athletics stage.

Hosting the European Athletics Championships in Poland highlights not only the country’s sporting achievements but also its capacity to organize major international events. It also reflects the European Athletics Association’s confidence in Poland as a host, which could further boost the development of athletics in the region. With upcoming events such as the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham, interest in athletics across Europe is expected to grow, along with intensified athlete preparation for future competitions.

As Poland prepares to host the 2028 European Athletics Championships, it is also taking a firm stance on international participation. In a related move, the country has decided to prevent Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing in the upcoming 2027 European Diving Championships. This decision underlines Poland's commitment to maintaining a competitive and fair sporting environment.
