The CEC approved proposals for elections after martial law: what is known
Approval of CEC proposals for elections
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Central Election Commission (CEC) approved a package of proposals regarding the organization of national elections after the end or cancellation of martial law at a meeting on January 7. This decision is an important step in the context of Ukraine's Euro-integration commitments, as reported by CEC Chairman Oleg Didenko.
The document that was adopted at the meeting will be sent to the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada for further consideration. Didenko emphasized the importance of the adopted proposals, noting that they contribute to building a substantive dialogue between the country and international partners. He also stressed that the proposals developed by the Commission are part of Ukraine's commitments in the field of Euro-integration.
Context of elections in conditions of martial law
It is worth noting that current legislation prohibits voting during martial law. However, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky recently allowed the possibility of holding elections, provided that security is guaranteed. Furthermore, in the international context, former U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the necessity of the electoral process in Ukraine.
In turn, Davyd Arakhamia announced the creation of a working group to address the issue of presidential elections in 2025, indicating an intensification of preparations for future elections in Ukraine.
The CEC's approval of election proposals is an important signal to the internal and international community about Ukraine's intentions to continue democratic processes, even under martial law. This may also contribute to strengthening the trust of international partners in Ukraine and its Euro-integration aspirations, as conducting elections is a key element of the country's democratic development.
At the same time, security issues remain critically important, and the further steps of the authorities will depend on the situation at the front and in the country as a whole.
