Kyiv's Podil Ferris Wheel Deemed Unsafe, Dismantling Begins
Podil's Landmark Ferris Wheel Removed
According to Главком: Dismantling has commenced on a 43-meter Ferris wheel located on Kontraktova Square in Kyiv. The decision to remove the attraction followed an official assessment that declared its structure unsafe due to the deteriorated condition of its support elements. In late 2025, the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office determined the wheel was hazardous because its framework rested on rotting wooden beams. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining public infrastructure in the city.
The removal process involved several legal steps that affected the wheel's operation. On December 26, 2025, the Podil District Prosecutor's Office announced suspicions of official negligence against the director of the Kyiv City State Administration's Department of Land Resources and the director of the City's Department of Territorial Control. In early January 2026, the Podil District Court of Kyiv seized the Ferris wheel, prohibiting its use.
However, in early March 2026, the court lifted the seizure and the operational ban, allowing the dismantling to proceed. The city administration, represented by Valentyn Mondriievskyi, expressed interest in seeing the Ferris wheel continue to operate at Kontraktova Square. Nevertheless, due to the safety risks, the city is negotiating with the owner about the possibility of relocating the attraction to a different site.
Accountability and Structural Issues
The problems with the Ferris wheel raised questions about responsibility for its poor state. As Mykhailo Budylov pointed out, the authority to dismantle such structures does not fall under the remit of the Department of Land Resources or the Department of Territorial Control of Kyiv. This situation underscores the critical need for rigorous oversight of the condition of public amusements and for ensuring citizen safety.
The dismantling of the Ferris wheel on Kontraktova Square is a significant step toward protecting the safety of Kyiv's residents and visitors. The official declaration of the structure as unsafe points to a necessity for city services to pay closer attention to the maintenance of public attractions. Ongoing talks about potentially moving the wheel to a new location indicate the city's desire to preserve this entertainment feature while prioritizing public safety. It is hoped that future incidents can be prevented through more thorough inspections and evaluations of similar structures.
The ongoing issues surrounding public infrastructure in Kyiv are not limited to the Ferris wheel. Recently, the head of the city's Municipal Greenery Agency has faced serious allegations, including potential prison time for causing significant budget losses. This situation further emphasizes the need for accountability in managing public resources. For more details on this case and its implications for Kyiv's governance, see the full story here.
