Mykola Zymovyi 2025: how and when to properly celebrate the holiday
The Feast of Saint Nicholas, also known as Saint Nicholas the Benefactor or Mykola Zymovyi, is celebrated on December 6 according to the new church calendar. This holiday has a rich history dating back to the 8th century, when Saint Nicholas was already honored as a great benefactor.
The holiday is associated with traditions that are special for Ukrainians. Children eagerly await Saint Nicholas, write letters with requests, and after prayers, look for gifts under their pillows. Also, on this day, solemn events are held in churches, and fairs and charitable events take place across the country.
It is recommended to visit the church, place a gift from Saint Nicholas under the child's pillow, help loved ones, and give alms. It is also worth preparing traditional honey cakes and gingerbread and adhering to prohibitions against scolding children and the elderly, not refusing beggars alms, observing fasting, and refraining from gossip.
