Olympic Judge's Scoring Raises Eyebrows

According to Главком: A judge from Azerbaijan has sparked controversy at the Olympic Games with a series of unusual scores. Canadian sports journalist Beverly Smith highlighted the scoring by judge Yuriy Klyushnikov, who awarded Russian figure skater Petr Gumennik a score of 96.96, which would have placed him fourth overall. This was particularly notable as Gumennik was sitting in 12th place at the time with a score of 86.72 from his short program. Figure skating judging has long been a subject of scrutiny, with calls for greater objectivity in the sport.

Questionable Rankings for Other Skaters

Klyushnikov's scoring for other athletes also raised significant questions, as his rankings diverged sharply from the overall standings:

  • He placed skater Egadze 5th, who was actually in 15th position.
  • He ranked Shaidorov 10th, despite the skater holding 5th place.
  • He placed Gogolev 16th, when the skater was in 10th place.

Smith pointed out the peculiar nature of this scoring, noting that Klyushnikov had previously represented Ukraine as a judge, adding another layer to the controversy.

The scandal surrounding Judge Klyushnikov's scores underscores the critical need for transparency and objectivity in sports officiating, especially at high-profile international competitions like the Olympics. Such questionable scoring can erode trust in the judging system and exacerbate tensions between participating nations. The reaction from the sports community indicates a pressing need to review scoring protocols to ensure fairness and integrity in competition.
