In 2022, a team from the University of Copenhagen undertook an in-depth study of rock paintings created by the Teotihuacan civilization inside Chalcatzingo Cave 19 in Mexico. Applying advanced digital imaging techniques, they uncovered concealed elements that shed light on the writing system, ceremonial practices, and military ranks of this ancient society. Their findings were published in the journal Antiquity.
Exploration and Discoveries
Back in the 1980s, three red symbols were discovered in a shallow cave carved into the cliffs of Chalcatzingo. This site has since become a key location for understanding the cultural legacy of Teotihuacan, a civilization that flourished centuries before the Aztecs. The cave lies within a region where inhabitants of the ancient city established settlements and conducted rituals. Led by Christoph Helmke, the research team created a detailed map of the cave and captured images using specialized software for digital photo analysis.
Among the symbols, one painting depicts a stylized mountain encircled by scrolls inscribed with texts interpreted as the place name 'Singing Mountain.' This toponym also appears in murals found at the heart of Teotihuacan, located just a few kilometers away. Another image features a necklace, cloak, and pointed wire-elements of Teotihuacan’s military gear-that may represent a specific warrior title. A third section shows a rectangular frame adorned with five-pointed stars positioned above a rock ledge.
The cave’s walls and ceiling above this ledge are stained red from fire exposure, indicating the space was used for fire-based rituals, possibly for burning incense or performing cremations. For decades, scholars debated whether these symbols formed a writing system; the new evidence strongly supports the existence of a script within Teotihuacan culture.
This investigation, conducted in partnership with the University of Copenhagen, opens fresh avenues for exploring the Teotihuacan civilization and its rich cultural heritage.
These discoveries highlight the crucial role of rock art as a source for understanding the social hierarchy and religious customs of ancient Teotihuacan. Leveraging modern technology, researchers can now analyze cultural artifacts more deeply, potentially leading to major breakthroughs in Mesoamerican history. Given Teotihuacan’s significance as a prehistoric cultural and political hub, ongoing study remains vital for comprehending the development of civilizations in this region.
These discoveries align with recent findings in Hidalgo, where researchers unveiled numerous representations of encounters with the underworld deity. Such connections deepen our understanding of the complex beliefs and rituals that permeated Mesoamerican cultures, further illustrating the intricate tapestry of ancient civilizations like Teotihuacan.
