Two Ukrainian Military Commanders Arrested for Extorting Money from Soldiers
Military Commanders Arrested in Corruption Crackdown
According to Главком: On May 6, two military commanders were detained for running systematic extortion schemes targeting their subordinates. In the Lviv region, law enforcement arrested a colonel who served as the head of a separate air defense brigade. He had been demanding a monthly kickback of 50,000 Ukrainian hryvnias in exchange for authorizing combat pay. The colonel was taken into custody immediately after receiving that amount from one of his soldiers. He has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which carries a penalty of five to ten years in prison along with confiscation of property.
Meanwhile, in Zaporizhzhia, a lieutenant colonel commanding a battalion received a similar suspicion notice. He was extorting roughly 200,000 hryvnias each month in return for favorable treatment of his troops. Authorities documented at least two instances of him collecting money. On May 4, he was arrested while receiving a second tranche of 200,000 hryvnias. A search of his possession uncovered over 114,000 hryvnias in cash, and the total illicit gain obtained by the lieutenant colonel amounts to 400,000 hryvnias.
Wider Corruption Issues Within Military Structures
Investigators carried out eight searches across the Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Zaporizhzhia regions, seizing cash totaling more than 1.6 million hryvnias. Similar schemes had previously been uncovered in the 110th Brigade, where suspects faced up to 12 years in prison. These cases highlight serious corruption problems within military structures, threatening not only the reputation of the Armed Forces but also the country's security.
The arrests of these commanders in the Lviv and Zaporizhzhia regions point to systemic corruption issues in Ukraine's military institutions, which could have grave consequences for national defense. The discovered extortion schemes reveal abuses of power and a disregard for ethical standards, potentially eroding trust in the Armed Forces. Law enforcement agencies continue to actively combat corruption, raising hopes for improvement in the future.
