Global Warming and Its Impact

Climate change in Ukraine is already having a serious impact on agriculture. Head of the All-Ukrainian Environmental League Tetiana Tymochko notes that droughts in the south and east of the country are becoming more frequent and intense, while floods in the west are markedly increasing due to heavy rains.

'The frequency and intensity of heatwaves, storms, and wildfires are increasing. Recently, record heat and dry weather have been recorded in Cherkasy, Kyiv, and Odesa regions,' the specialist notes.

Moreover, climate changes are leading to a shift in the beginning of the growing season and the emergence of new pest insects and aggressive weeds, which could pose a significant challenge for Ukraine's agricultural sector, Tymochko points out.

Threat to Agriculture

Geography candidate Vira Balabukh also emphasizes that global warming has the potential to create serious problems for growing traditional vegetables in Ukraine. Her research shows that summers in Ukraine could last up to 180 days a year by mid-century, while existing vegetable species may become very vulnerable to changing climate conditions.

The impact of global warming is already evident, and its consequences are becoming increasingly noticeable for nature and agriculture in Ukraine.
