The Death of Sergei Loiter

According to Главком: Sergei Loiter, a 42-year-old former commercial director for Yandex who held the role from 2022 to 2024, has died in a drowning incident. The tragedy occurred while he was fishing on the Volga River near Volgograd. Two other individuals also perished: Sergei Nazarov, a Volgograd-based property developer whose body has not yet been recovered, and Igor Prokhorov, the businessman's personal driver. Loiter's body was identified among the three deceased fishermen. During the investigation, authorities discovered head injuries on the victim. According to media sources, 'preliminary reports suggest they either capsized or struck something.'

Russian Top Managers Who Died Under Suspicious Circumstances

Loiter is at least the 20th high-ranking executive to die under mysterious circumstances in Russia since the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine. This growing list includes a range of senior officials who have met tragic ends. For instance:

  • In September of last year, the decapitated body of Alexei Sinitsyn, CEO of K-Potash Service, was discovered.
  • In August 2022, the deaths of Dmitry Osipov, chairman of the board of Uralkali, and Mikhail Kenin, founder of the Samolet Group, were reported.
  • In January 2022, Leonid Shulman, head of the transport service for Gazprom Invest, was found dead in the Leningrad region.
  • In February of that same year, the bodies of Vladislav Avayev, former vice president of Gazprombank, along with his wife and daughter, were discovered in a Moscow apartment.
  • In July 2022, Yuri Voronov, general director of Astra Shipping, died from a gunshot wound to the head.
  • In the fall of 2022, Ravil Maganov, chairman of the board of Lukoil, fell from a window at the Central Clinical Hospital of the Presidential Administration in Moscow.
  • Vladimir Nekrasov, who succeeded Maganov, died a year later from 'acute heart failure.'
  • In March 2024, Lukoil Vice President Vitaly Robertus passed away.
  • In 2022, Sergei Protosenya, a former top manager at Novatek, was found dead at a villa in Spain.
  • Alexander Tyulyakov, a top manager in Gazprom's financial division, was discovered in a garage near St. Petersburg.
  • Pavel Pchelnikov, director of communications for Digital Logistics/Russian Railways, was found on a Moscow apartment balcony with signs of suicide.

This growing death toll also includes cases such as the 2023 fall from a window of Kristina Baikova, vice president of Loko-Bank, and the death of Igor Shkurko, first deputy chairman of Yakutskenergo, in a Yakutsk pre-trial detention center. The death of Sergei Loiter, alongside his colleagues, highlights a troubling pattern among top managers in Russia amid political and social tensions.

The loss of Sergei Loiter underscores rising anxiety within Russia's business sector, where many senior executives have fallen victim to mysterious circumstances. This trend raises serious concerns about safety and stability in the country, especially given the backdrop of political uncertainty and economic hardship. The situation demands attention from both society and international organizations, given its potential implications for business operations and the investment climate in the region.
