Harsh Criticism from Ex-Dynamo Kyiv Star Boyko Over Karavayev’s Move to Shakhtar
Oleksandr Karavayev Joins Shakhtar Donetsk
According to Главком: Denys Boyko has weighed in on Oleksandr Karavayev’s transfer from Dynamo Kyiv to Shakhtar Donetsk. The 34-year-old defender made the switch as a free agent, signing a contract that runs until June 30, 2028. This decision came after limited playing time-during the 2025/26 season, Karavayev remained on the bench seven times while with Dynamo.
Boyko, a former goalkeeper for both the Ukrainian national team and Dynamo Kyiv, admitted that he personally finds the situation hard to accept. He emphasized his deep connection to the club, having been born in Kyiv and raised within Dynamo’s system, with his father also having played for the team.
“I am a person born in Kyiv who has been raised in the Dynamo system my entire life. My father also played for Dynamo. So, personally, it’s not easy for me to process this kind of situation,” Boyko stated.
Karavayev’s Perspective
Karavayev, meanwhile, explained that the move was made possible by an offer from the country’s champions, giving him a chance to continue a successful career.
“But for me, it’s a sign: when a team that is the national champion makes you an offer to strengthen their squad, I see it as recognition of hard work and that all of this is noticed,” Karavayev noted.
He also reflected on his time in Shakhtar’s academy, where he had opportunities to play for the first team but never appeared in an official match.
Boyko also expressed respect for Karavayev’s choice, acknowledging his contributions to Ukrainian football. “If for me, for example, Junior Moraes is someone who came here primarily to earn money, then Sasha Karavayev is a player who has given a lot to our country in football terms-to the national team and other clubs. His decision must be respected regardless,” Boyko said.
Ultimately, Oleksandr Karavayev’s transfer to Shakhtar Donetsk opens up new opportunities for the player, who aims to return to regular action on the pitch.
Karavayev’s move to Shakhtar highlights the fluid nature of Ukrainian football, where players constantly seek fresh chances to advance their careers. It also reflects the competitiveness of clubs and their eagerness to sign experienced footballers capable of boosting the squad. Meanwhile, Boyko’s emotional response as a Dynamo figure underscores the importance of club identity for many players and their supporters. It will be crucial to see how these changes affect the trajectory of both clubs in the near future.
As Karavayev embarks on this new chapter with Shakhtar, it's worth noting the circumstances that led to his departure from Dynamo. His limited playing time at the club raised questions about his future, a topic that has been discussed in detail in our article about the return of Shakhtar academy graduates and their struggles for game time.
