Rising Costs Could Trigger a Youth Exodus from Ukraine, Expert Warns
Ukraine's Demographic Challenge
According to ХВИЛЯ: Demographics expert Oleh Popenko has raised the alarm about Ukraine's future, warning that recent hikes in utility costs and cuts to social programs could spark a massive wave of emigration among young people. He argues this would leave the country populated primarily by pensioners, creating a severe demographic imbalance.
During an appearance on his YouTube channel 'Oleh Popenko PRO', the expert stressed that without a change in course, Ukraine risks losing its entire working-age population. This situation reflects a broader post-Soviet trend of 'brain drain' that many Eastern European nations have struggled to reverse.
'If we keep taking everything from the people, soon there will be no one left to work and no one left to live here. Only pensioners will remain, those who can survive... All the young people will leave. How could they not? Many have already gone, and especially now, there is nothing to keep them here.' Oleh Popenko
Popenko shared a personal perspective, citing his own daughter who remains in Kyiv with the intention of reforming the country: 'Dad, I want to change the country.' He is skeptical that politicians' attempts to retain the youth can succeed if their rhetoric fails to address the harsh economic realities people face.
'Try explaining to young people what you want [to keep them here]. With Portnykov's political statements? They couldn't care less about ideologically polished speeches.' Oleh Popenko
The Need for Social Policy Reform
Consequently, Oleh Popenko has called for an urgent overhaul of social policy to stem the potential outflow of young Ukrainians seeking better opportunities abroad.
The scenario outlined by Popenko highlights profound challenges for Ukraine, particularly regarding long-term demographic shifts. Statistical data suggests that youth emigration can have lasting consequences for a nation's economic vitality and social fabric, as the younger generation forms the backbone of future workforce development.
In light of this, it is crucial for the government to acknowledge these issues and formulate effective strategies to create favorable conditions for youth, thereby preventing further emigration and ensuring national stability.
