Power Grid Recovery in Ukraine Unlikely Before Next Winter, Expert Warns
Forecast for Ukraine's Electricity Supply
According to ХВИЛЯ: Energy expert Yuriy Korolchuk predicts that Ukraine's electricity supply situation will not see substantial improvement before the start of the next heating season. This is due to the critical capacity deficit in the energy system caused by damage from Russian attacks. The expert notes that restoring generation to previous levels is impossible, and constructing a new energy system could take until 2028. The ongoing war has made Ukraine's energy infrastructure a primary target, severely limiting recovery options.
Korolchuk shared this forecast during an appearance on the KYYIV24 TV channel. He observed that seasonal warming and longer daylight hours will reduce the strain on the grid.
"Yes, it will get warmer somewhere, it will be easier. Accordingly, there will be about 30% more electricity compared to what is available now. But 100%, even 70-80% of that, will not be achieved," the expert stated.
Challenges for the Upcoming Winter Season
During the next winter season, Ukraine will have to rely solely on repairs to existing facilities, as alternative generation is currently only capable of meeting the needs of critical infrastructure. Furthermore, the Ministry of Energy has warned of potential severe blackouts, which would add to the difficulties for the population and businesses. This precarious situation underscores the long-term strategic challenge of rebuilding a secure energy supply under constant threat.
The electricity supply situation in Ukraine remains extremely difficult, particularly given the ongoing destruction of infrastructure due to the war. In light of expert forecasts and ministry warnings, Ukrainians should prepare for new challenges and hardships in the next heating season. Restoring the energy system will require significant effort and time, jeopardizing the stability of the country's electricity supply.
