Ukraine's 2026 Summer Power Crisis: Scheduled Blackouts Could Return
Forecast for the Summer of 2026
According to ХВИЛЯ: Serhiy Kovalenko, CEO of the energy company YASNO, has issued a warning that Ukraine could face severe scheduled power blackouts during the summer of 2026. He stated that the risk is high if planned maintenance at nuclear power plants coincides with a heatwave and peak demand for cooling. Kovalenko emphasized that the summer of 2026 could pose a major challenge for Ukraine's power grid, which is still recovering from wartime damage.
During an appearance on the 'Ye Rozmova' program on the Ukrinform YouTube channel, Kovalenko stressed the critical role of nuclear generation, which provides the base load for the country's energy stability. In some months, nuclear plants cover up to 70% of Ukraine's electricity needs. Therefore, the exact scenario for summer 2026 will depend on the timing of nuclear plant maintenance schedules and the prevailing weather conditions.
Risks and Potential Consequences
Kovalenko elaborated on the potential situation during periods of high temperature:
“If the summer sees temperatures of +40°C, we understand that consumption for air conditioning will be enormous. If the temperature is, say, +15-20°C, then consumption won't be critical. The risk of blackouts remains if peak consumption coincides with the nuclear maintenance program,” noted Serhiy Kovalenko.
The schedule for nuclear power plant maintenance is classified for security reasons, and energy officials do not rule out the return of strict blackout schedules in June-July 2026. 'We have seen it all: when there is a lot of sun during the day, the load is not too heavy. But when there is no sun in the evening and morning, and nuclear generation, which produces over 50% of electricity, is physically unable to cope-it becomes difficult,' Kovalenko emphasized. These factors indicate that the summer of 2026 could be a critical period for Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
Kovalenko's statements highlight the urgent need for planning and preparation for potential future energy crises. Ukraine's energy security heavily relies on the stable operation of its nuclear power plants, which play a key role in meeting the population's energy needs. The prospect of possible blackouts in summer 2026 may push the government and energy companies to take active steps toward improving energy infrastructure and developing alternative power sources.
