Passport with biometric data of a Ukrainian
З нового року українців чекають серйозні зміни на кордонах з ЄС: як це вплине на перетин?

Data in the system will be stored for three years, which, according to the EU, will help shorten the time of subsequent checks. Biometric passports will also allow for the use of automated e-gates. It is expected that the new system will help reduce queues at the borders of the European Union. The government plans for registration in the system to be free of charge. However, it should not be confused with the upcoming ETIAS system, which will require online registration and a fee.

New entry/exit rules (Entry/Exit System, EES) will come into effect in the European Union, replacing passport stamps and requiring biometric checks for third-country citizens, including Ukrainians. The new system will be implemented starting October 12, 2025, and will operate at airports, seaports, and railway stations. The EES will record traveler data in a digital format and will require biometric identification - fingerprinting and facial scanning. Those who refuse will be denied entry.

The European Union is introducing a new entry and exit control system, EES, which involves replacing passport stamps with biometric checks. This will simplify the border crossing process and reduce queues at checks, but will require travelers to undergo biometric identification. The government promises that registration in the new system will be free of charge.
