EU Delays New Entry Rules for Ukrainians Until 2027

New entry rules for Ukrainians
ЄС відтерміновує нові правила в'їзду для українців до 2027 року.

Implementation of New Regulations Pushed Back

According to Главком: The European Union has postponed the introduction of updated entry requirements for citizens from visa-free countries, including Ukraine, until 2027. The primary reason for this delay is the slow rollout of the new EES system. Once implemented, travelers from visa-free nations will need to complete an online application and secure an electronic travel authorization before each trip. This permit will be valid for up to three years, but it will not replace a visa.

The new system will automatically log all border crossings and calculate the number of days spent within the Schengen Area. This will make it impossible to circumvent the 90-day maximum stay rule within any 180-day period, even by using a second passport.

Travel Freedom Extended

Until 2026, Ukrainians can continue to travel to Schengen Zone countries without needing an electronic permit. It is important to note that these new requirements do not apply to Ukrainians who hold temporary protection or a residence permit in an EU member state. This ensures a degree of freedom for those who have already secured protected status within the EU.

Additionally, a new route for tourist buses has been opened at the Ukraine-Romania border. This decision was made in response to a significant increase in passenger traffic during the summer months and growing pressure on border checkpoints in the Chernivtsi region. The new route aims to ease tourist transportation and reduce waiting times at the border.

The postponement of the new entry rules for visa-free travelers, including Ukrainians, reflects the European Union's commitment to ensuring the new system operates effectively and to avoiding potential complications during the transition period.

At the same time, the opening of this new tourist bus route on the Ukraine-Romania border could positively affect cross-border tourism flows, particularly during the summer season, which may in turn support the economic development of the region.

The delay in implementing the new entry rules for Ukrainians coincides with ongoing challenges at European airports, where travelers are already experiencing long wait times due to the current EES system. As border control processes evolve, understanding these complications becomes crucial for those planning to travel.
