EU changes rules for Ukrainian refugees: what to expect with the new status
The EU Council adopted recommendations on the new status for Ukrainians living in EU countries in September. The main goal is to provide them with the opportunity to gradually change their status or return to their homeland if possible.
According to the 'Wave' report, this was announced by the EU Council press service.
The new recommendations outline several key areas. Ukrainians should receive more information about their opportunities, and EU countries should enhance cooperation both among themselves and with Ukrainian authorities.
Procedure for obtaining status in the European Union
Regarding the acquisition of legal status, EU states recommend providing Ukrainians with national residence permits through work, education, or family reunification. They can also apply for statuses under European legislation if they are highly qualified specialists, provided they are not simultaneously using temporary protection.
Additionally, to support Ukrainians in returning and adapting to their homeland, it is proposed to organize information trips to Ukraine and voluntary return programs for a limited period, which will allow them to maintain temporary protection.
The EU Council has adopted new recommendations for Ukrainians in EU countries aimed at facilitating their status and return to their homeland when possible. Improving informational support and cooperation among countries are key priorities in this plan.
