The Issue of Unauthorized Absence from Unit

According to Главком: Volodymyr Mishchenko, a Hero of Ukraine and commander of the UAV company in the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after General Mark Bezruchko, has brought to light the systemic problem of soldiers leaving their posts without authorization (AWOL). He stated this issue is widespread across all military units. In his own unit, the most recent incident involved four soldiers. The primary drivers for such actions, according to Mishchenko, are combat fatigue and a desire to transfer to a different unit.

Potential Solutions to the Problem

Mishchenko shared a specific AWOL episode that occurred after intense fighting near the settlement of Solodke. To address the underlying strain, he has resorted to granting unofficial leave periods of five to ten days.

“Yes, I grant unofficial leave for five to ten days, but I assess each person individually. I let them go on their honor. Every one of them knows that if they are caught drunk or in some other incident, I will retroactively report them as AWOL,” Mishchenko noted.

Upon a soldier's return from an unauthorized absence, the formal reinstatement process can drag on for up to six months, during which time they receive no pay.

“This process can last up to half a year, and during this period the person doesn't get any money. This is the wrong procedure, and the state needs to think about how to shorten this path,” he emphasized.

To support soldiers facing such financial hardship, his unit has established a communal fund to provide assistance during these payment gaps.

Fatigue and the wish to switch units remain the core reasons for AWOL incidents. The lengthy chain of approvals required for reinstatement involves multiple levels:

  • The unit command
  • The brigade command
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • The General Staff

“We joined up to defend the country, not to make money,” Volodymyr Mishchenko concluded, underscoring the primacy of service to the nation's defense. This perspective highlights the complex reality for soldiers balancing immense personal sacrifice with systemic challenges.

The problem of unauthorized absences presents a serious challenge for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, requiring prompt resolution. Mishchenko's comments on troop exhaustion and protracted reinstatement procedures underscore the urgent need for policy reforms. While the use of unofficial leave can be a positive step for maintaining morale, it demands command attention to ensure overall service stability and effectiveness.

Understanding the complexities of unauthorized absences is crucial, especially when considering the challenges soldiers face upon their return. For those navigating the intricate process of reinstatement, knowing how soldiers can reintegrate without legal repercussions can provide valuable insights and support during a difficult transition.
