Anti-Drone Netting May Cover Kharkiv: Awaiting Defense Council Decision
Kharkiv Considers Installing Anti-Drone Nets
According to Главком: Oleh Syniehubov has announced that the installation of anti-drone nets in Kharkiv is under consideration, with the final decision to be made by the Defense Council. The northern part of the region, particularly the area near Derhachi, has been identified as a priority for net coverage. In total, 1,408 kilometers of anti-drone netting are planned, of which nearly 450 kilometers have already been completed.
According to data, between May 1 and June 22, Russia carried out over nine thousand strikes on the Kharkiv region, with 130 drones launched by Russia remaining unidentified. Syniehubov stated that
“we will continue to monitor the Kharkiv highway and the Saltivka direction as well”
(Oleh Syniehubov). These areas are also being considered for anti-drone protection.
Shelter Needs and Funding Challenges
Additionally, the outskirts of cities in the Kharkiv region require over a thousand concrete shelters, each costing between two million hryvnias. Syniehubov noted that
“we cannot fully finance this with regional and local funds”
(Oleh Syniehubov) and emphasized that
“we have repeatedly submitted requests to the Ministry of Restoration, as this is their program and funding responsibility”
(Oleh Syniehubov). He also pointed out that smaller shelters would require hundreds of millions of hryvnias.
In the Kherson region, over 207 kilometers of anti-drone protection have already been installed, and during May 2024, the State Special Transport Service installed more than 211 kilometers of anti-drone protection along front-line roads. Syniehubov stressed that
“these plans are constantly changing”
(Oleh Syniehubov) and that
“all of our resources are fully engaged”
(Oleh Syniehubov) in this effort.
The deployment of anti-drone nets in the Kharkiv region is part of a broader security strategy to protect the area amid active hostilities. The situation in Kharkiv remains tense due to ongoing shelling and drone threats, necessitating swift and effective defensive measures. At the same time, the shortage of shelters underscores the need for state budget funding to safeguard civilians and infrastructure.
In light of the ongoing threat posed by drone attacks, the installation of anti-drone protection measures is becoming increasingly crucial across Ukraine. As seen in the Kherson region, where over 207 kilometers of drone-proof road barriers have been successfully deployed, these efforts are vital for enhancing regional safety.
