The Threat of Chemical Weapons Use in Ukraine: Statement by the Director-General of the OPCW
The situation in Ukraine remains a troubling reminder of the threat posed by chemical weapons in modern conflicts, and the international community must enhance cooperation to prevent such crimes.
This was stated by the Director-General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Ambassador Fernando Arias, during a speech at the 109th session of the OPCW Executive Council.
'At the end of last week, information was released about the use of a wide range of chemical substances in Ukraine at an alarming frequency, including very dangerous ones,' noted Arias.
He emphasized the seriousness of the information being circulated and reported that the Secretariat would enhance vigilance and continue to monitor the situation on and off the front lines closely.
'In connection with the documented scheme of use, Ukraine and the Secretariat are negotiating further support for Ukraine under the Convention and relevant decisions of the governing bodies,' said the OPCW Director-General.
According to him, parallel to technical assistance visits, the Secretariat has continued to provide Ukraine with equipment and training support upon request in accordance with the Convention's provisions for assistance and protection.
The Conviction of the International Community
