A child's nighttime cough can be not only a symptom of an illness but also a cause of restless sleep for both the child and their parents. It is important to approach this problem comprehensively, providing not only assistance in relieving symptoms but also creating conditions for peaceful and sound sleep.

Precautionary Measures

Night cough in children can become less intense if you follow some simple recommendations:

  1. Dry air in the room can exacerbate coughing, making it more irritating and prolonged. Using a humidifier helps maintain humidity at 40-60%, which contributes to soothing the airways and easing the cough. It is important to regularly clean the humidifier to avoid spreading bacteria and mold.
  2. Sleeping on the back can contribute to increased coughing due to mucus accumulation in the throat. Elevating the child's upper body with extra pillows or a specially raised part of the mattress helps mucus drain more easily and reduces coughing frequency. This creates more comfortable breathing and contributes to a more peaceful sleep.
  3. Eliminating allergens such as dust, pet hair, and mold can significantly reduce nighttime coughing, especially if it is triggered by an allergic reaction. Regular cleaning in the child's room, using hypoallergenic pillows and mattresses, and avoiding heavy fragrances or perfumes in the room will help create a healthy sleeping environment.
  4. Too warm or cold air can cause or aggravate coughing. Maintaining a comfortable room temperature, which is usually between 18-20°C, promotes more peaceful sleep and reduces coughing.
  5. Place a bottle of water next to the child's bed so they can easily hydrate their throat in case of a coughing fit. Keeping the throat moist can help soothe the cough and make it less painful.

Daily Habits

To calm nighttime cough and alleviate symptoms, some daily habits should be implemented:

  • Drinking plenty of fluids during the day helps relieve throat dryness and thin mucus.
  • Avoiding allergens if the cough is caused by an allergic reaction.
  • A light massage of the back and chest using plant-based balms before bedtime can help relax and soothe the cough.

If the cough is severe and does not subside, it is necessary to seek medical advice. A doctor may recommend the use of certain medications to relieve symptoms or prescribe additional tests to identify the cause of the cough.
