Major repairs of Kharkiv Highway in Kyiv: what will change by the end of spring
Major repairs of Kharkiv Highway in Kyiv
According to Главком: Major repairs of Kharkiv Highway in Kyiv have been ongoing since October 5, 2025. The total cost of the project is 1.4 billion UAH. The active phase of work is currently underway, and the main volume of work is planned to be completed by the end of spring. The repairs cover a section of 5.4 km that connects the Dnipro and Darnytsia districts of the capital, specifically the section that connects the avenues of Sobornosti, Leonid Kadenyuk, and Mykola Bazhan.
Currently, the following has been completed:
- milling of the existing asphalt concrete surface,
- laying of geotextile,
- conducting backfilling of the road surface layer with a gravel-sand mixture.
As part of the repairs, the construction of a new rainwater drainage system is also planned, which includes collectors and pipelines with diameters of 300, 400, and 500 mm. The lower layers of asphalt concrete have already been laid on the section from Y. Lytvynskyi Street to Bratslavska Street (odd side).

In addition, a new rainwater drainage system with monolithic stormwater wells has already been built on the new section, and over 100 outdoor lighting poles with LED lights and an automated control system have been installed.
Plans for the future
A construction of an underground passage near the Institute of High Molecular Compound Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is planned, which will have elevators installed. There are also plans for new sidewalks and bike paths along the entire Kharkiv Highway, new bus stops and raised boarding platforms at tram stops. The repairs also include the modernization of all underground passages and a complete overhaul of the rainwater drainage system to minimize flooding.
Last December, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko made a visit to Kharkiv Highway to check the progress of the repairs. At the same time, experts express various opinions regarding the feasibility of the repairs in the context of ongoing active hostilities. Dmytro Bespalov notes:
“On the one hand, transport infrastructure is critical. But if funds are not invested in air defense or the protection of energy facilities, and instead invested in transport, it should be exclusively in strategic and critical infrastructure, such as bridges over the Dnipro or the metro. Is Kharkiv Highway such? Doubtful.”

Gennady Sintsov also comments on the situation: “The active phase of hostilities. Kyiv. The capital of a warring country. Repair of a huge non-emergency section of Kharkiv Highway. Madness!”
The major repairs of Kharkiv Highway, which are ongoing in wartime, aim to improve the transport infrastructure in Kyiv, which is important for ensuring road safety and convenience for residents. However, experts' opinions on the feasibility of such expenses during this difficult time are divided, highlighting the need for a thorough analysis of strategic priorities in infrastructure investments. The repairs may reduce risks associated with flooding and improve the overall condition of the roads, but the issue of prioritizing spending on infrastructure amid hostilities remains open.
As the city invests in improving its infrastructure, it's essential to stay informed about other significant projects affecting transit in Kyiv. For instance, the ongoing repairs at Maidan's pedestrian tunnel are also impacting public transport routes, highlighting the broader efforts to enhance urban mobility throughout the capital.
