Carlos Queiroz Takes the Helm

According to Главком: The Ghana Football Association has named Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Ghana national team. The 73-year-old Portuguese manager replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed after failing to qualify the team for the Africa Cup of Nations and losing both friendly matches in March. Queiroz brings a wealth of international experience, having managed nine different national teams across multiple continents.

Queiroz has coached at the FIFA World Cup with both Portugal and Iran. Earlier in his career, he led Portugal's youth teams to significant success, winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup twice and the UEFA European Under-16 Championship once. He first took charge of the senior Portuguese national team in 1991. His extensive club career includes managerial roles at:

  • Sporting CP (Lisbon)
  • New York Metrostars
  • Nagoya Grampus Eight
  • Real Madrid

He also served for many years as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, gaining invaluable experience at the highest level of the club game.

Ghana's World Cup Prospects

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama. Their opening match is scheduled against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, Canada. The appointment of Queiroz marks a significant moment for Ghanaian football as the team aims to rebuild and prepare for this major tournament. His arrival signals the federation's clear intent to improve the team's fortunes following the disappointing results under the previous management.

Queiroz's vast experience in international football, particularly his World Cup pedigree, is seen as a crucial asset for enhancing Ghana's competitiveness on the global stage. This move is widely viewed as an attempt to instill tactical discipline and a winning mentality in the squad.

His strategic approach and deep understanding of the game are expected to help the team achieve better results in crucial matches, including at the 2026 World Cup.

As Ghana embarks on a new chapter under Carlos Queiroz, the football landscape is buzzing with speculation about potential coaching strategies. Interestingly, the Ghana Football Association has also been in discussions with Hervé Renard, who previously led teams to notable victories, including a stunning defeat of Argentina. Such moves reflect the federation's commitment to elevating the national team's performance ahead of the World Cup.
