Clear-Cutting in the Carpathians Slashed by 70% as Forests Gain New Protection
Forestry Reform Takes Hold in Ukraine's Carpathian Region
According to Мін. Економіки: Ukraine's Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture has announced major shifts in Carpathian forestry policy. The state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' has decided to halt all clear-cutting for primary use in mountain forests. Under the updated guidelines, clear-cutting volumes will be reduced to just 30% of previously approved limits-marking the lowest level seen in years.
Adopting Sustainable Forest Management Practices
A full ban on clear-cutting is now just one year away. Exceptions may be made only in cases of large-scale tree die-off or when cleaning up after natural disasters like fires or windstorms. However, any such exception will require a mandatory environmental impact assessment.
As part of the reform, the Carpathian region is introducing new forest management techniques borrowed from Germany. Marteloscope training sites are being established to teach selective logging methods, and forest management plans are being updated to eliminate scheduled clear-cutting entirely. These steps signal a shift toward close-to-nature forestry, aimed at preserving forest cover and biodiversity.
The changes reflect a growing emphasis on ecological sustainability and the protection of natural resources in Ukraine. By cutting clear-cutting volumes and adopting modern management practices, the government hopes to safeguard biodiversity in this ecologically sensitive region. The move also demonstrates Ukraine's willingness to integrate international forestry expertise-a model that could influence other sectors of the economy.
