Cyber Police Alert: Scammers Selling Fake Driver's Licenses Online
Warning Issued Over Fraudulent Schemes
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Cyber Police and the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) have issued a public warning regarding online scams involving the sale of counterfeit driver's licenses. Criminals are creating fake social media pages that advertise attractive offers for obtaining these documents. To make their offers seem legitimate, the fraudsters use genuine photographs and addresses of real MIA service centers, provide specific institution numbers and official working hours, and supplement this with fabricated customer reviews.
Buyers are promised that the scammers have 'insiders' within the MIA structure and that their documents will appear in official databases. In reality, customers only receive plastic cards that are not registered in the government's 'Diia' app or the Driver's Cabinet. Furthermore, providing scammers with copies of a passport and tax identification number grants them access to personal data, which can be abused for activities like taking out microloans or hacking bank accounts. As noted by Police Lieutenant Colonel Oleksandr Ulianenkov,
"Criminals can use your documents in other schemes: from taking out microloans to hacking bank accounts"
.
Legal Methods for Obtaining a Driver's License
It is important to note that no official MIA service center sells documents online. Using a forged driver's license is a criminal offense. Citizens should remember that it is impossible to 'buy' a license online. The only legal procedure for obtaining a driver's license involves:
- Theoretical training (independently or at a driving school) and passing an exam at a territorial service center;
- Practical training at a driving school;
- Successfully passing a practical exam at a service center;
- Personally collecting the license upon presentation of a passport.
This situation highlights the ongoing challenge of cybercrime, particularly as society becomes more reliant on online services. Citizens are urged to be vigilant and skeptical of offers that seem too good to be true, as falling for them can lead not only to financial loss but also to serious legal consequences. Raising public awareness of these fraudulent schemes is a crucial step in combating cybercrime. In many countries, similar online scams exploit the demand for official documents, making this a widespread issue for authorities to tackle.
