Kyiv Heating Crisis: 300 Apartment Buildings Still Without Heat Following January 9th Attack
Heating Situation in Kyiv
According to ХВИЛЯ: Approximately 300 high-rise apartment buildings in Kyiv remain without heating as a consequence of the massive attack on energy infrastructure that occurred on January 9th. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that immediately following the attack, 6,000 buildings lost their heat supply. While there is positive momentum in restoration efforts, the heating situation remains critical as of today.
Over 1,200 heating points have been deployed across the capital to support residents facing these difficult conditions. Some apartment blocks have now been without heat and electricity for six consecutive days. Klitschko noted that Kyiv is operating under emergency power outage schedules. To address the crisis, generators are being connected to heating points for some of the larger residential buildings that lack both heat and power.
"The team is doing everything possible under these circumstances, but the situation remains far from ideal, given the energy sector's difficulties and the unfavorable weather conditions."

The Critical Need for Stable Energy Infrastructure
This crisis underscores the vital importance of a stable energy infrastructure during armed conflict and amid climate challenges. Restoring reliable heating and electricity is absolutely critical for ensuring the comfort and safety of the capital's residents, especially during the winter months. The ongoing actions of the city authorities and energy companies will be decisive in improving living conditions and mitigating the impact of such emergencies on the population. This incident highlights the severe civilian toll of attacks on critical infrastructure, a recurring tactic in the ongoing war.
