Kyiv's Path to Power Security: Why a Network of Mini-Power Plants is the Answer

The Potential of Distributed Power Generation for Kyiv

According to ХВИЛЯ: YASNO CEO Serhii Kovalenko has outlined the potential for distributed power generation in Kyiv. He stated that while the city cannot become fully energy independent, establishing a network of mini-power plants could ensure the operation of critical infrastructure and meet the basic needs of its residents. This approach is gaining urgency as Ukraine's energy grid faces sustained pressure from targeted attacks.

As the largest consumer of electricity in Ukraine, Kyiv typically dedicates a quarter of its power usage to critical services like water utilities, district heating, and hospitals. This underscores the vital importance of a reliable power supply for the city's basic functioning.

'Providing electricity for the normal operation of critical infrastructure is always the first priority-that's typically 20-25% of consumption. And then, having maybe a third of the power for the population, even if on a schedule, is possible.' Serhii Kovalenko

A key advantage of distributed generation is the speed of deployment. While constructing one large facility can take about five years, building one hundred smaller plants simultaneously could be completed in just nine months.

'One large facility will take 5 years to build. But the very philosophy of this distributed generation suggests that 100 small facilities start construction at the same time... They can be completed at a certain pace, for example, within nine months.' Serhii Kovalenko

Against this backdrop, the business sector is now more actively investing its own funds in energy independence, a trend that differs from the residential sector. With an estimated nine months remaining until the next heating season, the need to address the capital's power supply is increasingly pressing.

The Strategic Role of Distributed Generation

Distributed power generation could become a crucial element of Kyiv's energy strategy, especially given the heightened need for reliable electricity sources. Considering the timelines mentioned by Kovalenko, implementing mini-power plants offers a chance not only to secure critical infrastructure but also to reduce strain on traditional energy systems.

This move could also represent a significant step toward enhancing Kyiv's energy resilience and improving the quality of life for its inhabitants.
