Kyiv's Sokil Hockey Club Eyes Leagues in Poland or Romania, with European Ambitions Carrying a Price Tag
Sokil Considers Competing in Polish or Romanian Championships
According to Главком: Kyiv's Hockey Club Sokil is evaluating the possibility of joining either the Polish or Romanian national championships, a move that would necessitate a larger budget and a strengthened roster. The club has ruled out participation in the Baltic Hockey League, where the Ukrainian team Kyiv Capitals competed this season. This potential move highlights the growing ambition of Ukrainian clubs to seek stronger competition beyond their domestic league.
To compete in the Romanian championship, Sokil would require a seasonal budget of approximately 600,000 to 700,000 euros. Entry into the more competitive Polish league, however, would demand a budget of at least one million euros. As Vyacheslav Letskan noted,
"the current Ukrainian champion needs to bolster its squad with 5-6 foreign legionnaires."
Club Ambitions and Recent Success
In the summer of 2025, reports emerged about Sokil's intent to play in the Romanian championship while also continuing to compete in the Ukrainian league. The club solidified its domestic dominance by securing its 16th national championship title in April 2026, defeating Kremenchuk 4-1 in the final series.
Exploring entry into the Polish or Romanian leagues underscores Sokil's desire to expand its competitive horizons and enhance its standing in European hockey. While such a step could elevate the team's performance and aid in developing young talent, it requires significant financial investment and strategic roster planning. Success on an international stage could also boost the club's profile and attract new sponsors. It remains to be seen how Sokil will pursue these ambitions and what specific steps it will take to achieve them.
