China Could Serve as Guarantor for a Potential Iran-US Deal
Exploring a China-Brokered Agreement Between Iran and the United States
According to Главком: Iran's ambassador to China, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, has suggested that Beijing could act as a guarantor for any future accord between Tehran and Washington. He stressed that such an agreement must include assurances from major global powers and be discussed within the United Nations Security Council. Fazli noted that both China and Russia, as two large and influential nations, could play a pivotal role in this process, given Beijing's stance toward Iran and other countries in the Persian Gulf region.
In early April, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited China to discuss the possibility of Beijing serving as a guarantor for the deal. According to Pakistani sources, the visit also covered support for Chinese mediation efforts. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed its willingness to maintain communication aimed at achieving peace in the region.
Threats and Developments from Iran
On the other hand, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has urged China to deliver a warning to Iran about global isolation, linking this to Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio remarked that
“what you are doing in the straits is leading to your global isolation”
and added that Iran must not attack ships or lay mines in the waters, as this threatens the world economy.
Against this backdrop, on May 10, 2026, Iran established the Persian Gulf Strait Administration (PGSA), which, among other responsibilities, oversees maritime traffic in this strategically vital waterway. Notably, approximately 20% of the world's oil shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Vessels that ignore PGSA requirements risk becoming targets of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
As a result, the question of guarantees for a potential Iran-US agreement remains unresolved and requires further international discussion, particularly within the UN Security Council. Given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz to the global economy, developments in this area could have significant consequences not only for the region but also for international security. The situation demands close attention from the global community, as any provocations could escalate conflicts and impact energy markets.
As tensions escalate in the region, it's essential to consider the implications of Iran's recent warnings and the potential for conflict in key maritime routes.
