Ukrainians Warned Against Travel to Hungary

According to Главком: Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is urging Ukrainian citizens to refrain from traveling to Hungary in the lead-up to the country's parliamentary elections on April 12. He warns that the political climate is overheated, and random roadside checks could pose problems for drivers with Ukrainian license plates. Kuleba recommends avoiding trips to Hungary to steer clear of unpredictable situations. This advisory comes amid a period of heightened diplomatic friction between the two neighboring states.

This warning follows a recent incident where Hungary detained Ukrainian cash collectors, causing alarm in Ukraine. Oschadbank reported the seizure of its employees, vehicles, and valuables on Hungarian territory. In response, Ukraine sent an official note demanding the immediate release of the cash collectors. By March 6, Ukraine had secured the return of the detained personnel, but tensions remained high.

Potential for Conflict Escalation

Ukraine's current Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, has indicated that Ukraine views the incident as a potential provocation. Kuleba has also expressed the view that the situation with Hungary is likely to deteriorate as the election date approaches. He stated that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán intends to show his voters that he is a 'tough, forceful figure,' which could lead to a further escalation of conflict between the two nations.

Kuleba further noted that the issue of resuming operations of the Druzhba oil pipeline is complicated in this context, as any decision could be exploited for political purposes.

The ongoing situation could significantly impact bilateral relations, affecting not only political ties but also economic interests. The approaching Hungarian elections and related political maneuvering may lead to increased tension, directly affecting Ukrainian citizens planning travel. Observers are closely monitoring developments, as they have implications for regional stability beyond the immediate bilateral dispute.
