Former US Envoy: Russia's Staggering Losses in Ukraine Make Victory Impossible
The International Stance on the Ukraine Conflict
According to Главком: In an interview with Japan's NHK television, former US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg argued that Russia cannot achieve a military victory in Ukraine, citing the enormous casualties the country has sustained. Kellogg stated that Russia's total losses, including those killed and seriously wounded, have reached between 1.2 and 1.4 million people. He further emphasized that
"he is not going to gain more territory"
and that
"he has nothing to win."
In a related diplomatic development, it was reported that Putin's special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, met with representatives of Donald Trump's administration in the United States. Following this meeting, Dmitriev thanked the American side for the negotiations held in Florida. Steve Witkoff provided details on the outcomes of these talks.
A Call Between Leaders
Furthermore, on March 9, Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. This was the first discussion between Putin and Trump in over two months, and also their first known contact since the start of the US and Israeli attack on Iran. During the call, the leaders discussed the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.
Keith Kellogg's assessment of Russia's unsustainable losses and the improbability of its victory reflects growing international concern over the conflict's trajectory. These high-level contacts, including meetings between officials and the direct leader-to-leader call, suggest ongoing, though challenging, diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. The situation underscores the critical role of sustained dialogue in managing global instability, even when positions seem intractable.
