Moscow Eyes the Baltics: Why Russia May Test NATO's Article 5
Russia's Internal Crisis and the Baltic Threat
According to ХВИЛЯ: Political analyst Yuriy Romanenko stated during his solo broadcast that the Kremlin is considering a military strike against the Baltic states. The primary goal of such an attack would be to discredit the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and force Western nations into negotiations over a new division of spheres of influence. At the same time, Russia is experiencing a deepening internal crisis, while its controlled information space is preparing the public for possible peace talks.
Romanenko noted that the Russian leadership is currently searching for weak points in Europe's security architecture to exploit for blackmail.
“I believe the Russians now view the Baltic states as the weak link-striking through them could be an attempt to frighten Europe. Through arrangements with Trump, they aim to gain market access and once again redraw spheres of influence,” he said.
Russia's Domestic Troubles and Their Security Implications
The expert also emphasized that the Russian government is losing its monopoly on information due to criticism from pro-war military bloggers, known as Z-voenkors. “The problem is that information is increasingly leaking through various channels from these military correspondents and well-known bloggers. They highlight problems and shortcomings in the Russian army, after which the authorities crack down on them harshly,” Romanenko added.
Citing a column by David Ignatius in the Washington Post, Romanenko pointed out that Putin is entering spring in a difficult position.
“His army is bogged down in Ukraine despite enormous losses, and the economy is in dire straits. And it is this very weakness that is dangerous. Putin may decide to act before the window of opportunity closes,” he quoted Ignatius as saying.
Research by Eugene Rumer, a former U.S. national intelligence officer for Russia, also points to the possibility of Putin launching an attack against one of the Baltic neighbors. “If Putin truly intends to impose his vision of security on the continent, he may conclude that time is not on his side. Accordingly, he could launch an attack against one of the Baltic neighbors to demonstrate the ineffectiveness of NATO's Article 5,” Romanenko stressed, citing Rumer.
In this context, the situation in Russia and the potential threats to the Baltic states remain pressing topics for expert analysis. Meanwhile, political turbulence continues across the Atlantic, and Ukraine's defense industrial base is strengthening. This suggests that regional security and stability remain under threat, and developments in Ukraine could have serious consequences for European security as a whole.
As tensions escalate, the Kremlin's focus on the Baltic states raises questions about Russia's broader military strategy. In light of ongoing challenges in Ukraine, analysts suggest that Russia may seek a swift victory in the Baltics to shift the narrative and regain leverage in its negotiations with the West.
