Kyiv's Power Plant After 13 Strikes: European Officials Witness Damage and Kyiv's Consequences
Deputy Prime Minister Leads European Delegation to Kyiv Power Plant
According to Міністерство інфраструктури: Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kubela guided a delegation of parliamentarians from 14 European nations on a visit to a Kyiv thermal power plant (TPP). The purpose was to show the direct impact of missile strikes on this critical piece of infrastructure. During the tour, officials presented a plan for preparing for the upcoming heating season and discussed Ukraine's urgent needs within the energy sector.
Scale of Damage and Current Needs
The facility has endured a total of 13 missile and drone attacks, with 9 of those occurring during the current heating season. Before the full-scale invasion, this station provided heating and hot water to more than 500,000 residents of the capital. It serviced over 1,100 residential buildings, as well as schools, kindergartens, and medical institutions. Currently, more than 700 plant workers continue to repair equipment and maintain its operations under extremely difficult conditions.
We showed our partners the real consequences of attacks on civilian energy infrastructure. This is not a military target-it provides heat for people.
Oleksiy Kubela
Ukraine's overall emergency requirement for additional electrical and thermal power capacity now exceeds 1,800 MW. The visiting delegation included representatives from:
- Germany
- France
- Italy
- Denmark
- Sweden
- Poland
- Spain
- Lithuania
- Estonia
- Austria
- Czech Republic
- Finland
- Hungary
- Slovakia
The visit by Kubela and the European MPs underscores the critical importance of international support for Ukraine during the war, particularly for restoring vital infrastructure. Such on-the-ground tours allow partners to witness the scale of destruction firsthand and better understand the challenges Ukraine faces in achieving energy stability and security. This direct exposure is often a crucial step in mobilizing further practical assistance and cooperation in the energy field from European nations.
