Driving Test Language Barrier Removed for Ukrainians in Lithuania

According to Главком: Ukrainian citizens residing in Lithuania can now take the theoretical driving exam in their native language. This policy change, implemented after numerous requests from the Ukrainian community, expands the previous options of Lithuanian, Polish, English, Spanish, and French. Prospective drivers can register online to take the test in Ukrainian. This move is part of broader European efforts to integrate refugees from the ongoing conflict.

By late 2024 to early 2025, Lithuania is home to approximately 77,000 to 86,000 Ukrainian citizens, who form the largest group of foreigners in the country, most holding temporary protection status. In responding to their needs, Lithuania aims to demonstrate solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

Vladislav Kondratovich stated: 'We received many requests from Ukrainians to take exams in their native language and could not remain indifferent. Most of these people came to Lithuania fleeing the large-scale war Russia unleashed in Ukraine. By ensuring their access to state services, we express solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens.'

Fundraiser for Robotic Systems

Separately, Lithuania has announced a fundraiser for robotic systems, running from February 9th to 24th. A single robot kit may cost up to 250,000 euros. The initiative plans to collect various types of robotic systems, including:

  • tracked robots
  • casualty evacuation robots
  • cargo transport robots
  • reconnaissance drones
  • long-range drones
  • interceptor drones

These efforts highlight Lithuania's commitment to supporting both defense capabilities and humanitarian needs.

Permitting the driving test in Ukrainian is a significant step in supporting refugees who relocated to Lithuania due to the war. This decision not only simplifies the process of obtaining a driver's license but also underscores Lithuania's commitment to integrating and supporting foreign citizens. Concurrently, the fundraiser for robotic systems demonstrates Lithuania's readiness to invest in defense, a relevant consideration given current regional security challenges.
