Lyudmyla Sheremet: A Medic's Ultimate Sacrifice for Ukraine

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: Lyudmyla Sheremet, a medical worker who became one of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, was killed defending Ukraine's freedom during the Revolution of Dignity. She was born on November 21, 1942, in Makiivka, Donetsk region. Throughout her professional career, Lyudmyla worked as an anesthesiologist in hospitals in the Luhansk region and in Khmelnytskyi.

In 2004, Lyudmyla Sheremet actively participated in the Orange Revolution, supporting democratic changes in Ukraine. Later, in November 2013, mass protests began in the country in support of a pro-European integration course. The violent dispersal of peaceful protesters by authorities in Kyiv on the night of November 30, 2013, marked the start of large-scale clashes. These events, known as Euromaidan, were a pivotal moment in modern Ukrainian history.

Tragedy and Legacy

During the events of the Revolution of Dignity, Lyudmyla Sheremet did not stand aside. On February 19, 2014, she was shot in the head by security forces firing from a building. As a result of her injuries, Lyudmyla died on the morning of February 22, 2014. That period was especially tragic, as February 20, 2014, saw the single highest death toll in Kyiv, with 48 people killed.

In total, the Heavenly Hundred comprises 107 individuals who died for Ukraine's freedom during these turbulent events. Among them are:

  • 54 protesters killed or mortally wounded during the winter of 2013–2014
  • Five Maidan activists who died in the spring of 2014

For her service, Lyudmyla Sheremet was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine, honoring her memory as a symbol of the struggle for dignity and freedom.
