Polish Sejm Marshal's Visit to Kyiv

According to ХВИЛЯ: Włodzimierz Czarzasty, the Marshal of the Polish Sejm, will make an official visit to Kyiv on February 24, 2024. This date marks the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a somber commemoration that underscores the visit's significance. Accompanied by Deputy Marshal Monika Wielichowska and MP Paweł Kowal, Czarzasty will be the first person to visit Kyiv while serving as Marshal of the Sejm.

Primary Focus of the Visit

During his stay, Włodzimierz Czarzasty will deliver an address to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament. The central themes of his speech will include:

  • Unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity;
  • The critical need to maintain and increase pressure on Russia;
  • Ukraine's European future.

Furthermore, the visit will see the signing of a new strategic cooperation agreement between Poland and Ukraine, alongside the establishment of a joint parliamentary-expert group.

Czarzasty will emphasize the importance of solidarity with Ukraine, as the Polish Sejm is set to adopt an official resolution in support of the country. An exhibition dedicated to Russian attacks using Iranian-made Shahed drones will also be opened within the Sejm building. During his visit, the Marshal expressed skepticism regarding potential trilateral talks between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. He noted that 'every real step towards a ceasefire is important,' but simultaneously stressed that one cannot pretend Russia has become a good-faith negotiator.

'Aid cannot be chaotic; it must be responsible.' - Włodzimierz Czarzasty

Czarzasty added that Ukraine's reconstruction is an investment in the security of all Europe. He also noted that Poland has passed a law granting amnesty to Polish citizens who fought on Ukraine's side, though this legislation still requires approval from the Polish Senate and the President's signature. This visit occurs against a backdrop of significant developments, as in March 2024, Ukrainians who fled to Poland in 2022 will lose their international protection status. Poland has been one of Ukraine's staunchest allies and a primary destination for refugees since the war began.

Marshal Czarzasty's trip to Kyiv represents a pivotal moment for Polish-Ukrainian relations, particularly within the context of the ongoing war. The timing of his arrival powerfully underscores Poland's solidarity with Ukraine during this critical period. The strategic cooperation agreement to be signed could serve as a major step in strengthening bilateral ties, especially in the face of escalating challenges from Russia.
