The Hillsboro, New Jersey Meteorite

According to НВ — Техно: A meteorite blazing through the atmosphere at red-hot temperatures tore through the roof and bedroom ceiling of a home in Hillsboro, New Jersey, breaking apart on impact. The homeowner, who discovered fragments smelling of sulfur, collected the pieces into jars while wearing gloves. He then contacted the American Meteor Society for further analysis.

Research and Findings

Scientists believe this meteorite may have originated from an asteroid’s surface that once contained liquid salty water-a finding that could offer insights into the origins of life on Earth. Analysis led by meteorite expert Mike Zolensky from the Johnson Space Center revealed organic compounds and amino acids inside the rock. The material showed stronger signs of water alteration than other meteorites of a similar class. Initially classified as a CM2 carbonaceous chondrite, it was later reclassified as an intermediate type CM½-making it only the second such specimen ever found on Earth.

Tiny salty fragments were also discovered within the meteorite. Using eyewitness reports and camera footage from the U.S. East Coast, the research team reconstructed the object’s flight path. Doppler weather radar at Newark Airport captured a long trail of debris stretching from Staten Island into New Jersey. Scientists suggest the meteorite came from the inner region of the asteroid belt.

Researcher Peter Jenniskens noted: 'Thanks to the homeowner’s quick response, these are the best-preserved CM½ meteorites we know of.'

Some of the meteorite fragments are now on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where they remain available for study.
