Drone Blockade of Crimea Announced by Ukraine's Defense Minister Fedorov
How Drones Are Shifting the War's Momentum
According to ХВИЛЯ: In an interview with the PRESSING project, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov outlined major shifts in the dynamics of the war, focusing on the isolation of Crimea through drone operations, strikes on Russian logistics and artillery, a surge in drone procurement, and improved air defense effectiveness. According to the minister, drones are effectively sealing off Crimea, and it appears the peninsula may soon become an island in practical terms. Fedorov noted that this year's tourist season in Crimea will be 'exclusively for our drones.'
The minister highlighted recent Ukrainian military achievements: over three nights last year, drones destroyed nearly 800 units of Russian armored vehicles. In the past two nights alone, 250 Russian artillery systems were taken out, all with video evidence. In some frontline areas, losses from enemy artillery have reached 10-20%. In May, Ukraine liberated 100 square kilometers more territory than Russia managed to capture, while the rate of territorial losses dropped by a factor of 3 to 5.
Drone Purchases and Air Defense Gains
Over the past four months, Ukraine has acquired more drones than in all of the previous year. Contracts for fiber-optic and Middle Strike drones have increased by 300% compared to last year. Preparations are now underway for a tender to supply 150,000 Middle Strike drones and copters. During the interview, Fedorov stated that for the Russians, 'hell is beginning-the kind that is very hard to deal with.'
Air defense effectiveness has also improved: interceptors now take down up to 90% of targets, and over Odesa, all 42 Shahed drones heading for the city were successfully intercepted. The development of small-scale air defense and interceptor drones is led by Pavlo Yelizarov (call sign Lazar). Fedorov emphasized that the goal is to intercept at least 95% of aerial targets, halt the enemy on the ground, and strip Russia of resources for war. Ukraine is currently testing low-cost missiles capable of shooting down Shaheds and cruise missiles. Several consortia are also working on an anti-ballistic project, while artillery is being transitioned to precision-guided laser munitions.
'We will not let the Russians close this window of opportunity. We will open a new one when we see this one closing.' - Mykhailo Fedorov
A logistics lockdown is being ensured through direct funding of units that actively deploy long-range Middle Strike drones. According to Fedorov, Russia earns up to $150 million per day, underscoring the importance of continuing to enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian military operations.
These statements from the defense minister highlight the critical role drones play in modern warfare and their impact on shifting Ukraine's military strategy. The focus on unmanned technologies and bolstered air defense reflects the Ukrainian military's adaptation to the realities of combat. Increased drone procurement and new frontline achievements indicate an active strengthening of Ukraine's armed forces in countering Russian aggression, which could significantly influence the conflict's future trajectory.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its drone capabilities, recent developments show that Ukrainian drones are now reaching targets in Russian rear areas up to 300 kilometers away. This strategic shift not only amplifies the pressure on Russian forces but also underscores the effectiveness of Ukraine's evolving military tactics in the ongoing conflict.
