Ukraine’s Justice Ministry Seeks Seizure of Assets Belonging to Ex-PM Azarov and His Son
Lawsuit Filed by Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice
According to Главком: The Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has brought a case before the High Anti-Corruption Court demanding the confiscation of assets owned by former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and his son Oleksii. Through this lawsuit, the Ministry seeks to transfer the Azarovs’ property to state revenue, citing their active support for Russian Federation aggression.
Mykola Azarov, who served as Ukraine’s prime minister from March 2010 to January 2014, fled the country after the Euromaidan Revolution. Following his escape, he endorsed the annexation of Crimea, and after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, he continued to provide informational backing to the aggressor nation. Oleksii Azarov, a former member of parliament from the Party of Regions, also left Ukraine immediately after his father’s resignation. Both men are on wanted lists but currently reside in Russia.
Azarovs’ Activities and Assets Targeted for Confiscation
According to official information, Oleksii Azarov’s business structures supply material and technical support for Russia’s armed aggression, pay taxes into the Russian budget, and manufacture goods used in the war. He also operates a network of enterprises on Russian territory.
The assets listed for seizure include:
- real estate properties and land plots in Kyiv and the Kyiv region
- cash funds and corporate rights
- jewelry items
- books and icons of historical and cultural significance
In December of last year, the Pechersk District Court in Kyiv found Mykola Azarov guilty of high treason. His assistant and Telegram channel administrator was also convicted in the same case. Mykola Azarov has since become a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, holding a doctorate in geological and mineralogical sciences, and was elected to its Earth Sciences division with a specialization in mining sciences.
This lawsuit is part of a broader Ukrainian strategy to combat corruption and recover assets tied to individuals who back Russian aggression. Confiscating the Azarovs’ property could mark a significant step toward restoring justice and reinforcing accountability for actions that threaten Ukraine’s national security. It also underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the rule of law and fight corruption at every level.
In light of ongoing legal actions against prominent figures linked to corruption, the case against Mykola Azarov and his son highlights a broader trend within Ukraine's justice system. As authorities intensify their efforts to tackle corruption, another significant trial is underway involving a former government official accused of a billion-hryvnia fraud scheme.
