Moldova Summons Russian Ambassador Over Putin's Decree on Passports for Transnistria
Rising Tensions Between Moldova and Russia
According to Главком: On May 18, Moldova's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russia's ambassador to Chișinău, Oleg Ozerov. This move followed a decree by Russian President Vladimir Putin that introduced a simplified procedure for granting Russian citizenship to residents of the breakaway region of Transnistria. Under the new rules, Transnistrian residents can obtain Russian passports without needing to reside in Russia or pass a Russian language exam.
Adding to the friction, Moldovan authorities reported a violation of their airspace by a Russian military drone. The unmanned aircraft traveled from north to south before disappearing from radar, raising alarms among Moldovan officials who view such actions as a potential threat to national security.
Statements and Analysis
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu also weighed in, accusing Moldova of imposing an economic blockade on Transnistria. The Kremlin justified the simplified citizenship policy as a measure to protect human rights and freedoms, citing international law.
Some analysts suggest these moves signal Russia's intent to recruit new personnel. As expert Dorin Recean noted,
“Russia is simply short of soldiers, and such decrees are an attempt to bring in new cannon fodder.”
These developments highlight escalating tensions between Moldova and Russia amid the ongoing regional crisis. The simplified citizenship process could strengthen Moscow's influence over Transnistria, a long-standing flashpoint in Moldova-Russia relations. The airspace violation also points to possible Russian military ambitions in the area, sparking concern among neighboring countries and the international community.
As tensions continue to rise, the implications of Putin's decision to simplify passport access for Transnistrians become increasingly significant. This development not only raises questions about Moldova's sovereignty but also suggests a deeper strategy by Russia to exert influence in the region amidst ongoing geopolitical challenges.
