Rare Find During a Danube Inspection Operation

According to Главком: During a fishery protection patrol on the Danube River, scientists from the State Fisheries Agency of Ukraine came across a Black Sea salmon (Salmo labrax) weighing 3.9 kg. Listed in Ukraine's Red Book of endangered species, this fish is considered one of the least studied members of the salmon family in the Black Sea basin. The fact that this specimen was caught during the spawning season adds even more significance to the event. Such encounters are exceptionally rare, making this a noteworthy occurrence for researchers and conservationists alike.

The operation was carried out by the Odesa Fishery Protection Patrol and the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Specialists from the Black Sea Division of the Institute of Fisheries, Marine Ecology, and Oceanography (part of the State Fisheries Agency) also took part. The Black Sea salmon was found in one of the commercial fishing nets on the Danube, highlighting how crucial these patrols are in preventing illegal fishing and protecting vulnerable species.

After the discovery, scientists conducted a full biological analysis of the specimen. They recorded its morphometric and meristic characteristics, determined its sex and age, and collected tissue samples for molecular genetic studies. The research team plans to compare these findings with European genetic databases, which will aid in further understanding the current state of the Black Sea salmon population and help shape future conservation strategies.

The Black Sea salmon is one of the least studied salmonids in the region. Its appearance in catches is extremely rare, so every documented case is vital for understanding the current state of the population and developing measures to preserve it.

Poachers Caught and the Importance of Fishery Patrols

During the same patrol in the Danube's Starostambulskyi branch, authorities also caught illegal fishermen. Among the confiscated catch were:

  • two specimens of stellate sturgeon (also listed in Ukraine's Red Book),
  • three specimens of common carp.

The incident took place at the 11th kilometer of the Danube River, within the Danube Biosphere Reserve. This underscores the ongoing need to protect water resources and their biodiversity from poaching and other threats.

This discovery not only highlights the rarity of the Black Sea salmon but also demonstrates the importance of regular fishery protection patrols in preserving biodiversity in Ukraine's rivers. The detection of illegal fishing further emphasizes the need for stricter enforcement of environmental laws and water resource regulations. Future research based on this find could help develop effective strategies to conserve these rare species in their natural habitat.

The significance of protecting endangered species in the Danube is underscored by recent incidents involving illegal fishing activities. For instance, authorities recently apprehended poachers with an endangered sturgeon, highlighting the ongoing threats to vulnerable aquatic life. Such events emphasize the necessity of continued vigilance and enforcement in preserving the region's biodiversity.
